Shaken Baby Syndrome

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

I read this post at My Happy Crazy Life and it really touched my heart.

I was very young when I had my daughter and went through a very tough time. Fortunately for me, my mother-in-law saw it and came to my rescue.

Having a baby can be one of the hardest things on a mom. Oh, not the 9 months or the delivery. It’s the first few months, after the delivery, that are tough.

Especially for brand new moms or moms that have no support. Everything changes and the amount of sleep required to manage a new baby is often not feasible. Without sleep, anyone can lose control.

I really like this article because it gives practical ways of dealing with a crying baby. It’s OK to place them safely in their crib, close the door and let them cry for a few minutes, giving you time to gather your composure.

I know it’s not easy, but much better than losing our tempers and doing something we’ll regret for the rest of our lives.

I like what this article says:

Having a plan for dealing with frustration is the key in preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome. Sometimes babies cry and can’t be soothed, no matter what you do. When you feel yourself getting upset remember that it’s more important to stay calm than to stop the crying. continue reading this article

mommy of three: Get a FREE letter from SantaLetter from Santa

I was reading mommy of three and found this. I was so excited, I couldn’t wait to share it with you. Your child can actually receive a letter from Santa and it doesn’t cost you a thing! Well except some colored ink and white paper.

I remember when my baby, (now 37) was little. We didn’t have that sort of thing. But as my grandchildren grew, it was cool to see things like this appear.

After receiving the Santa letter in the email, you could even put it in the mail so your children receive it, just like a regular mailed letter. How fun!

Wow, if I’d received a letter from Santa when I was small, it would have been a thrill!!

We Have a New Baby!!

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Well, not me and my husband exactly, but we do have a new granddaughter. She’s so beautiful.

Here are a couple of pictures.

Baby Addyson
Baby Addyson

Her name is Addyson. Don’t ya just love that name? She was born on October 18th and everything went well. We have a happy healthy baby, almost 7 pounds!

I talked with her mom to decide which baby bracelet I should make for her. We decided on a pearl baby bracelet with a Lil sis charm. She has 2 older sisters and they will get bracelets with Big Sis charms. Maybe I’ll get some more pictures.

Well our prayers go out to all you new moms. You have a touch job. Your value is beyond rubies and much fin gold. Don’t ever forget that. May God richly bless you and remind you that you are His child and He loves you more than you can even know.

Halloween Alternative

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

I’ve never been a fan of Halloween. As far as I’m concerned it’s just an opportunity for kids to get into trouble.

However, I don’t think it’s right to take the fun away from our kids, either. So what’s the solution?

Well, my daughter is an elementary teacher at a Christian school. What they have done the last few years is have a Trunk r Treat. Ever heard of it?

What they do is get all the parents to buy lots of candy. Then on a designated evening, they all meet at the school. Each one bringing their own vehicle. Then, guess what??

Yep, they all park with trunks facing each other and have their bowel of candy right there in the trunk. When I heard this I thought, What a great idea!. Having the children’s parents handing out the candy leaves little to worry about. No crazies giving our children things that can hurt them.

Why not try something like this with your family and friends. Or even suggest it to your school.

As far as I’m concerned, better safe than sorry.

Please share your Halloween Alternative ideas with us by posting a comment.

Baby’s First Birthday

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

After years of pushing myself and paying the price, I would suggest you keep this special occasion relatively simple.

If you do plan on making this a big occasion, plan way ahead, and don’t let yourself get stressed. It’s supposed to be fun. Its for your baby, not the adults.

Here are a few tips to help you plan for your party.

Having a theme will make it easier. It could be anything: favorite character/cartoon, nursery motif, or simply your favorite colors.

I suggest using paper tableware. You may be able to get all you need in a package, like Party in a Box has; or just go to Walmart and select what you need in the colors you’ve chosen.

Before you actually go shopping, make a list of everything you’ll need. The way I do that is to think about the party from the time it will begin until it ends. As you visualize the party in your head, write down everything you envision needing, on your list.

For your party area, all you’ll really need is a safe area for the children to play and interact. For older children you may want to have some crafts or games, but don’t over do it. The adults will most likely be standing, enjoying watching their children.

Something important to remember is that kids can tire easily. Especially young ones. The party should be simple and not too long.

An excellent idea would be to ask a favorite babysitter to attend the party, specifically to help you out. Sometimes mom’s simply over do. It’s hard not to. It’s our nature, but like I said, you can not continue to push yourself without paying a price. It’s important that you take care of you.

And may I suggest a lovely keepsake gift?? Baby Bracelets by Shers Wares, of course. The perfect gift for that special little girl. To receive a 15% discount, simply type Special Offer in the voucher box upon check out.

You can also search the Internet for mom sites. Many of which have wonderful gifts for any occasion. Buying over the Internet can save so much time, however, be sure you’re confident in whom you’re buying from.

Now that you’ve taken steps to be prepared, try to just enjoy this first birthday with you’re special little one. It will only come once.

Potty Training Tips by Dr. Phil

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

What You Need

  • A doll that wets
  • A potty chair
  • Big boy/girl underwear (instead of diapers)
  • Lots of liquids for your child and the doll to drink
**Note that the following instructions using liquids also apply to potty training for bowel movements.

    Consider Before You Begin

  • Development: The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests waiting until 2 years of age to potty train.
  • Modeling: You can demonstrate or have the doll demonstrate the process of “going potty.”
  • Motivation: Find out who your child’s superhero is. The hero will provide the motivation in this process.

Step 1: Teach a Doll That Wets
Your child will learn by teaching the doll how to go potty. Have your child name the doll and give it something to drink. Then walk the doll to the potty chair with your child. Pull the doll’s “big kid” underwear down and watch the doll go potty together.

Step 2: Throw the Doll a Potty Party!
When the doll successfully goes potty, throw a potty party! Make it a big blowout with party hats, horns and celebrate. Give lots of attention to the doll so that your child understands that going potty is a good thing.

Let your child know that when he goes potty, he will have a potty party too. Not only that, your child gets to call his favorite superhero to report the good news!

Step 3: Get Rid of the Diapers
At the beginning of the process you placed underwear on your child’s doll. Now it’s time to take away the diapers and put underwear on your child.

Step 4: Drink Lots of Fluids
Give your child plenty of fluids to drink. The sooner he has to go potty, the sooner you can begin potty training.

Step 5: Ten Trips to Potty When Accident
Ask your child if he needs to go potty. Your child might say no and that’s OK. Because you’ve given your child plenty of fluids, he will soon need to go.

If your child has an accident in his underwear, don’t scold him. You want this to be a positive experience. Instead, take your child to the potty, pull his underwear down, and have your child sit down. Do this 10 times. This builds muscle memory and your child will eventually go.

Step 6: Let the Celebration Begin!
When your child successfully goes potty, throw him a potty party. Most importantly, your child can now call his favorite superhero and tell the hero about what he just did! Enlist the help of a friend or relative to play the hero and take the phone call.

When your child has an accident, simply take him/her to the bathroom ten times in a row as you did before. This will continue to build muscle memory. And don’t forget to keep up the positive reinforcement.
